How to Say Goodbye in a Bad Relationship

It is never easy to say goodbye to someone. Even saying goodbye to friends from your job that you are moving from, moving away, or ending a relationship can be hard.

Goodbyes are part of life, but they are never easy. When you have to say goodbye, there are things that you can do to make your heart not hurt so much.

Intentions

No matter what kind of relationship that you are in, make sure that you know what you want when you say goodbye. Do you want to end the relationship and never start it back up again? You can say bye without saying goodbye because you can always come back.

Be Clear

When you end a relationship, you need to be clear about what you want. Make sure you are direct, and you end it with them in person. Do not ghost them and do not make them feel worse than it already is.

Be Short

No one wants to hear all of the reasons that they make you miserable or unhappy. When you are ending a relationship, make it short.

Tell them that you feel like you need to be friends or that you want to live your own life for now. Let them understand that and wish them the bet life after.

This can seem harsh, but you need to make sure that this is short and sweet and isn’t confusing. Don’t make them think you are coming back to them.

Focus on You

Learn to focus on yourself and do not make the other person feel bad for who they are. If they have treated you bad, just let it go and let the focus be on you saying goodbye.

Expect Them to React

After being with someone, you should expect that they will have a reaction when you end the relationship.

This can cause the person that you are breaking up with to have a fight or flight feeling and to respond a certain way.

The person that you are breaking up with might be angry and they might blame you or make excuses. This can be hard to deal with but if you know this is what you need, move forward.

Don’t React

If someone you are saying goodbye to does react in a certain way, be calm and let them react without you following up on it.

This is easier to say than to do but if you find that they are reacting big and that they are reacting angrily, the best thing that you can do is to remain calm and wish them the best.
